Roman Map Quiz

How the app works, and a smart way to study with it

This app helps you learn the 20 places for your Roman World map quiz. The maps look just like the ones in your workbook: black lines and dots, no colors, no names. That's what the test will look like too.

Two maps

Use the buttons at the top to switch maps:

Map 1: West Workbook page 24: Britannia, Gallia, Alpēs Montēs, Italia, Tiberis, Roma, Vesuvius Mōns, Sicilia, Carthago
Map 2: East Workbook page 25: Byzantium, Troia, Mare Aegaeum, Graecia, Athenae, Sparta, Rhodus, Creta, Alexandrea, Aegyptus, Nilus

Moving around the map

The five buttons

1. Explore -- learn the places.
Tap anything on the map to see its Latin name, what we call it in English, and a fun fact. Turn off "Show all names on map" to test yourself: point at each place, say its name out loud, then tap it to check.
Want to practice on paper? Tap Print blank map for a map with just the dots, like the test. Fill it in, then tap Print answer key to check your work.
2. Find it -- where is it?
The app shows a name, like Gallia. Tap that place on the map. If you tap the wrong spot, the app tells you what you tapped, and you get one more try. Miss twice and the right place glows gold so you can see it. (With hints on, you also get a Show me button.)
3. Name it -- what is it called?
One place glows gold. Pick its name from 4 choices. If you get it wrong, the app shows the right answer and a fact to help you remember.
4. Type it -- spell it!
One place glows gold. Type its Latin name and press Check (or Enter).
5. Progress -- how am I doing?
Every place can earn up to 3 stars ★★★. Get it right on the first try and you earn a star. Miss it and you lose one. 3 stars means you've mastered it, and it turns green on the map. The app saves your stars on this device, so you can stop and come back later.

Hints

Hints start off, like on the real test. To turn them on, check Hints on the start screen of any quiz. With hints on, the app tells you what kind of place it is (city, river, island...), and you get the Show me and Hint buttons. Places also light up when you move the mouse over them. Use hints while you're learning, then turn them off to test yourself.

A good way to study

  1. Explore both maps with names on. Read the facts.
  2. Do Find it on Map 1, then on Map 2.
  3. Do Name it until most places have stars.
  4. Finish with Type it. This is the closest to the real test.
  5. Check Progress. Try to get all 20 to 3 stars!
  6. The day before the test, print a blank map of each page and fill it in from memory.

Short practice sessions on different days work better than one long session the night before. Bona fortūna! (Good luck!)
